And he\u2019s coming to the Grand Meeting 2026 from 31 July to 2 August.<\/strong>[\/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading uncode_shortcode_id=”767337″]\u201cKurti\u201d, the amateur who beat the world\u2019s best[\/vc_custom_heading][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row row_height_percent=”0″ overlay_alpha=”50″ gutter_size=”4″ column_width_percent=”100″ shift_y=”0″ z_index=”0″ content_parallax=”0″ uncode_shortcode_id=”199548″][vc_column width=”2\/3″][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=”402592″]Kurt Karl Heinrich \u201cKurti\u201d Ahrens was born in Braunschweig in 1940, the son of racing driver Kurt Ahrens Senior. Motorsport was therefore in the family \u2013 and the son inherited not only the passion, but also the talent. In 1958, he began his career in Formula 3 and became German Champion in Formula Junior in 1961, 1963 and 1965 \u2013 three titles that established his reputation as one of the greatest German Formula talents of his generation.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=”155803″]But Kurt Ahrens was no ordinary racing driver. Whilst his colleagues were raking in huge sums and travelling the world in private jets, he remained a down-to-earth man from Braunschweig \u2013 with a family, a business and a circle of friends. He raced as an independent driver, in his own car, without factory support \u2013 and yet he was on a par with the world\u2019s elite. When Jack Brabham offered him a permanent place in the Formula 1 team in 1968, Ahrens turned it down. His reason: \u201cI want to remain my own boss.\u201d[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=”235254″]In 1968, he made his Formula 1 debut nonetheless, on home soil at the German Grand Prix at the N\u00fcrburgring, alongside Jack Brabham and Jochen Rindt. It remained his only Formula 1 race. Not because he wasn\u2019t good enough \u2013 but because that was what he wanted.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=”235254″]What followed was another chapter full of glorious moments: in 1969, Kurt Ahrens became a Porsche works driver and, alongside Jo Siffert, secured the first-ever victory for a Porsche 917 \u2013 at the 1,000 Kilometres of Austria on the newly opened \u00d6sterreichring in Zeltweg. It was a historic moment for Porsche, for the young Ferdinand Pi\u00ebch \u2013 and for Kurt Ahrens. The following year, he won the 1,000 kilometres at the N\u00fcrburgring alongside Vic Elford in a Porsche 908\/3.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=”235254″]At just 30 years of age, at the height of his career, Kurt Ahrens retired from competitive racing in 1970 \u2013 to devote himself to his family and the family business. It was a decision that speaks volumes about him as a person and remains admirable to this day.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=”235254″]Today, Ahrens accompanies the Porsche Museum on driving assignments at prestigious classic car events around the world \u2013 and will be a very special guest at the Grand Meeting 2026.
